In the city – Green light for big cities
The development of cities will play a crucial role in the future of the planet – on all levels: environmentally, socially and economically. While 30% of all people in the world were living in cities in 1950, this figure had risen to 55% by 2018 – i.e. one in two people. Here in Europe the urbanisation rate is 73%, in the USA 81%, in Asia 48% and in Africa 40% – and these numbers are still rising. According to ‘17 Goals Magazine’, although cities account for just 2% of the overall global surface area, they are responsible for 75% of global energy use. An imbalance from which Patricia Epsinosa, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), draws the following conclusion: “Cities are where the climate battle will be won or lost.”
